PROJECTS IN PROGRESS:
Collaboration with video artist Sue Costabile: An adaptation of Sonami's current solo work in progress "The Appearance of Silence (the invention of perspective)".
Project description:
Inspired by the gardens depicted at the vanishing points of early Italian Renaissance paintings where the imagination can wander unobstructed, Sonami researched the first treaties on perspective. These first attempts at accurately representing reality have been followed by the development of technologies, each revealing their idiosyncrasies when obsolete.
"The Appearance of Silence " does not attempt to give any historical or literal representation of the use of various technologies, rather explore the shifting perspectives between concrete representation and abstraction, the "here" and "there".
Sonami has developed sensor-based instruments which allow her to control digital sounds and kinetic objects thru body gestures. Costabile has developed a unique approach to live video performance by manipulating textures and objects in performance . The projected images of her caption are further transformed thru her custom software.
Combining their approaches, Sonami's gestures will influence the video images projected by Costabile, masking and revealing them thru her movements. Costabile will adapt to these changes by changing her angles of exploration. The projection surfaces themselves will be controlled thru robotics.
The intention is to allow the audience's perspective to glide between points of perspective, between concrete sonic and visual representation of life, and abstract, ambiguous imaginary spaces.
The only historic reference will be Robert Ashley's reading of Alberti's first treatise on perspective, in latin which will punctuate the performance.

ON HOLD: "THE HISTORY OF THE LIGHT BULB". Performance in collaboration with Paul DeMarinis .
The theme of the yet untitled work will be the lightbulb, its origins, social and metaphorical dimensions and the projected circumstances of its future demise. The performance will use several varieties of lighting including tallow lamps, arc lights and, of course, lightbulbs. The sound will be both live and recorded, ambient and textual. This will be their first collaborative performance since the 1991 "Mechanization takes Command" presented at Ars Electronica.
